Its primary goal was to produce national and state-level estimates of the total number of trucks and was conducted every 5 years as part of the economic census. Other Federal Surveys with Transportation-related Data Elements - The Census Bureau conducts the American Community Survey (ACS) on an ongoing basis to provide vital information about our nation and its people, including information on jobs and occupations, educational attainment, home ownership, veterans, etc. In addition, it collects information about the commuting patterns of workers in our country, such as typical modes of transportation taken to and from work, time of departure and commute time. - The American Time Use Survey (ATUS), sponsored by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), provides estimates of the amounts of time people spend on various activities, including working, leisure, childcare, and household activities. The ATUS also collects information on the time spent on travel-related activities, along with select details on each travel activity (e.g., mode of transportation and reason for trip). The survey has been conducted annually since 2003. - The Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CE) program provides data on expenditures, income, and demographic characteristics of consumers in the United States. The CE is the only Federal household survey to provide information on the complete range of consumers' expenditures, including transportation expenditures for motor vehicles, fuel, and other transportation expenses and services. National Household Travel Survey (NHTS – Federal Highway Administration) - The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), and its predecessor the Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS), have been conducted by the Federal Highway Administration every 5-7 years since 1969. Data is collected on daily trips taken by households and individuals in selected households over a 24-hour period and provides a snapshot of how, when, and why people travel in their daily lives, by all modes of transportation (e.g., car, train, bus, bicycle, walk). Data collection for the 2016 NHTS should be completed by the summer of 2017.
